GOLD criteria


COPD severity


Stage 0
  • Severity: At risk
  • Spirometry: Normal
Stage I
  • Severity: Mild
  • Spirometry: FEV1/FVC-ratio <0.7 and FEV1 >= 80% of predicted
Stage IIA
  • Severity: Moderate
  • Spirometry: FEV1/FVC-ratio <0.7 and FEV1 between 50%-80% of predicted
Stage III
  • Severity: Severe
  • Spirometry: FEV1/FVC-ratio <0.7 and FEV1 between 30%-50% of predicted
Stage IV
  • Severity: Very severe
  • Spirometry: FEV1/FVC-ratio <0.7 and FEV1 <30% of predicted, or 
    FEV1 <50% predicted with respiratory failure or signs of right heart failure

Abbreviations
  • FEV1 = forced expiratory volume in 1 second
  • FVC = forced vital capacity
  • GOLD = Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
